Singapore is a vibrant tapestry of cultures, and one of its most treasured aspects is its diverse culinary scene especially for a product known as kaya. A sweet custard jam made with egg yolk, coconut milk, and sometimes pandan. Now, among the numerous eateries that serves this iconic jam and have stood the test of time is Chin Mee Chin Confectionery. With its iconic pastel blue colored facade, this humble establishment is not just a simple kopitiam; it's actually also a bakery.
Founded in 1925, Chin Mee Chin Confectionery is a quaint, traditional kopitiam nestled in Singapore's East Coast Road in Katong district. Stepping through its doors is like taking a step back in time. The vintage tiles, marble tables, pastel colors, and old-fashioned cabinets are a testament to its long history. This bakery is more than just a place to satisfy your sweet tooth; it's a living relic of Singapore's past.
Chin Mee Chin Confectionery is renowned for its delectable pastries, and the aroma of freshly baked goods wafts through the air as soon as you enter. Here are some of the treats we have tried:
Butter Kaya Toast (2.2SGD): a beloved Singapore breakfast staple. Soft and fluffy, smoky charcoal-toasted sliced buns slathered with a luscious combination of butter and their house made Hainanese-style kaya jam that is not too sweet. Combine with a side of dark soy sauce mixed in gooey soft-boiled egg it strikes the perfect balance between sweet and savory.
Kaya Custard Puffs: Light, crispy, and airy, the cream puffs that looked like Japanese melonpan are filled with a rich and velvety custard kaya cream. A twist and a delightful indulgence for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Kopi-C (1.7SGD): Robust and sweet mix of dark roasted coffee mixed with evaporated milk Singaporean-style.
Iced Cold Milo (2.4SGD): need I say more? A cold milo drink perfect for the warm mornings.
Kaya Toast + Egg + Drink Set (4.9SGD): you can order a breakfast set with your drink choice of Kopi O/C or Teh O/C.
Kaya Jam Jar (7.0SGD/10.0SGD): they also sell kaya jam in jars, but we opted not to buy even if we wanted to. Their jam is so freshly made it can only last long around a week.
Experience was fantastic. When we arrived around 10am, we were actually expecting a line but to our surprise there was not much. An uncle even helped us get a table which was in front of the bar.
Even though the temperature outside was hot and humid (which is normal in Singapore), the place was quite cool and well-ventilated with the ceiling fan.
They also have a wide al fresco area equipped with portable air coolers.
If I were ever going back in Singapore, I will visit this place again for breakfast. And maybe buy some kaya jam for back home.
